Eigenschaften

Sagittarius ist ein helles und auffälliges Sternbild und liegt östlich von Scorpius und südlich von Aquila, in Richtung Zentrum unserer Galaxis, der Milchstraße, dessen fahl leuchtendes Band sich über den gesamten Himmel erstreckt. Die Fläche dieses Sternbilds beträgt 867 Quadtratgrad und das Zentrum kulminiert jeweils etwa am 5. Juli um Mitternacht. Manche erkennen in Sagittarius eine Milchkelle, welche die Milch der Milchstraße schöpft, doch das eindrücklichste Alignement in diesem Sternbild ist das des Teapot, einer Teekanne:

Im Spätsommer, wenn unter den kurzen, hellen Nächten endlich eine einmal wieder richtig dunkel klar ist, sieht man den Teapot im Süden mit aufgesetztem Deckel, dem Henkel im Osten und dem Ausguss im Westen. Im Laufe einer Nacht lässt sich verfolgen, wie der Teapot wie zum einschenken nach Westen verkippt und so scheint die helle, sternenreiche Region der Milchstraße wie zwei, drei Dampfwolken aus dem Ausguss aufzusteigen. Befindet man sich weiter südlich auf der Erdkugel, so ist auch der mit Milch aufgehellte Tee zu erahnen, der sich auf den Schwanz des Skorpions zu ergießen scheint. [9, 15]

Mythologie und Geschichte

Sagittarius ist ein altes Sternbild, das einen Zentauren mit Pfeil und Bogen darstellt. Zentauren sind Fabelwesen und sollen vor allem in Bergwäldern gelebt haben. Sie besitzen einen menschlichen Oberkörper auf dem Leib eines Pferdes.

In der griechischen Mythologie ist Ixion der Urvater der Zentauren. Der König der Lapithen in Thessalien, der einst - als geladener Tischgenosse bei den Göttern - der Hera, der Gattin des Zeus, in Lüsternheit Gewalt antun wollte. Doch Zeus ließ dies nicht zu und täuschte ihn mit einem Wolkengebilde, das aussah wie Hera. Dieser frevelhafte Versuch blieb allerdings nicht ungestraft und Ixion wurde in der Unterwelt auf ein sich ewig drehendes Rad gefesselt. Nephele ward Mutter und schenkte einem Wesen das Leben: dem Urzentaur. Ein wildes Geschöpf war dieser Pferdemensch, gewalttätig, weingierig, weibertoll und ungezügelt, voll von Trieben und nie befriedigt. Er schwängerte alle Stuten am Pelionberg in Thessalien und zeugte damit das Geschlecht der Zentauren. [20]

Eine besondere Ausnahme unter den Zentauren war Chiron, auch Crotus genannt. Er war der Sohn des Gauners Pan, welcher die Beine einer Ziege besaß, und Eupheme, die Amme der neun Musen. Chiron sang zur Leier als Dichter von der Entstehung der Erde und der Götter. Heilkräuter und Arzneien kannte er. Er war ein weises, hilfsbereites und gastfreundliches Wesen und war Erzieher vieler Helden und mancher Göttersöhne. Achilles, Asklepios und Herakles, sowie Orpheus und Jason, der Argonauten-Fahrer, waren darunter. Chiron gilt als der Erfinder des Bogens und der Pfeile und er war damit der erste Schütze. Chiron war unsterblich, denn Kronos hatte ihn einst in Pferdegestalt gezeugt. Doch als er einmal mit Heraklesan vergifteten Pfeilen hantierte, da drang versehentlich eine Pfeilspitze in Chirons Huf und verletzte ihn. Die Wunde bereitete ihm ständig unsagbare Schmerzen und er - der Unsterbliche - wünschte sich den Tod. Zeus versetzte ihn dann als Sternbild des Schützen an den Himmel. [20, 52, 80]

Nach [7] ist Sagittarius älteren Ursprungs als Centaurus und soll den grimmigen, ungezügelten Zentauren darstellen, der seinen Bogen auf Antares, dem Herz des Skorpion gerichtet hat, während Centaurus mit Chiron identifiziert wird.

Die Sumerer sahen in Sagittarius Negral, den Kriegsgott. Die Ägypter deuteten das Sternbild als Pfeil in einer menschlichen Hand. Vor 3000 Jahren sahen die Inder in dieser Sternkonfiguration ein Pferd, einen Pferdekopf und manchmal sogar einen Reiter. In vielen antiken Kulturen wurde die Milchstraße als jener Weg gesehen, den die Seelen nach dem Tod entlanggehen und Sagittarius repräsentierte den Torwächter des Todes. [20]
