Eigenschaften
Scorpius ist trotz einer Fläche von 497 Quadratgrad ein großes, helles und eindrückliches Sternbild und zählt zu den schönsten des Himmels. Er befindet sich teilweise im Band der Milchstraße, nahe dessen Zentrum, westlich von Sagittarius. Die Umrisse dieses Sternbilds erinnern sehr stark an die Gestalt dieses Tieres: Die drohend vorgestreckten Scheren liegen im Sternbild Libra; die markante Sternformation um Antares, dem Herzen des Skorpions, stellt den Brustpanzer dar; sogar der zum Angriff aufgerichtete Schwanz mit dem Giftstachel ist durch einen Sternenbogen angedeutet. Das Zentrum des Sternbildes kulminiert jeweils etwa am 3. Juni um Mitternacht. [9, 15]

Mythologie und Geschichte
Felszeichnungen im Kaukasusgebiet zufolge war das Sternbild des Skorpions schon im 3. Jahrtausend v. Chr. bekannt, doch der Skorpion kommt auch in der Orionsage vor:
Orion war ein mächtiger Jäger, der aber auch durch seine schöne Gestalt sogar Göttinnen in Liebe zu fesseln verstand. Eifersucht und Missgunst waren die Folge, die dem Orion schließlich das Leben kostete. Bei einer anderen Todesversion spielt der Skorpion eine Rolle. Gäa, die Göttin der Erde schickte dem Orion einen giftigen Skorpion, weil er prahlte, dass es kein Tier gäbe, welches er nicht erlegen könne. An einem Skorpionstich soll Orion also gestorben sein, oder kam ihm doch noch rechtzeitig der Schütze zu Hilfe? Zur Strafe wurde der Skorpion an eine Stelle am Himmel versetzt, die dem Orion fast genau gegenüber steht, so dass Orion aufgeht, wenn der Skorpion untergeht. [20]

Die Griechen des Altertums zählten die Gegend, wo sich heute das Sternbild Libra befindet, noch zu Scorpius und sahen hier die Scheren des Skorpions. Daher stammen auch noch die arabischen Sternnamen. Zu Lebzeiten Julius Cäsars trennten die Römer in diesen Bereich ab und bildeten das eigenständige Sternbild und Tierkreiszeichen Libra.
Indianer aus Zentralbrasilien sehen im Skorpion ein Tragnetz für Kinder. Indianer aus dem Flussgebiet des Rio Negro in Nordbrasilien sehen den Skorpion als Große Schlange mit aufgerissenem Maul und gewundenem Körper. Der helle Antares ist die hinuntergewürgte Beute der Schlange. Beim Schwanzende liegt das Ei der Schlange. [20] Die Indianer des nordamerikanischen Stammers der Navajo deuteten die vier Sterne, welche den Stache des Skorpions formen, als einen Fußabdruck eines rennenden Hasen. Das erste Auftauchen dieser Konstellation in der Morgendämmerung kündigte den nahen Frühling an. [61, 107]
