Sternbild Ophiuchus (Schlangenträger)

Eigenschaften
Ophiuchus ist mit 948 Quadratgrad ein großes aber nicht sehr eindrückliches Sternbild und liegt zwischen Hercules und Scorpius. In einer dunklen Nacht erkennt man mit etwas viel Phantasie in den Sternen einen großen Mann, wie ihn etwa ein Zweijähriger zeichnen würde. Der südliche Teil des Sternbilds liegt im Band der Milchstraße. Das Zentrum des Sternbilds kulminiert jeweils etwa am 11. Juni um Mitternacht. [9, 15]

Mythologie und Geschichte
Der mächtige Schlangenträger wird mit Asklepios, dem griechischen Gott der Heilkunst, in Verbindung gebracht. Er war der Sohn des Apollon mit seiner Geliebten, der schönen Koronis aus Larissa.

Eines Tages beobachtete Apollons Rabe die Koronis beim Seitensprung mit einem Jüngling aus Thessalien und berichtete dies seinem Herrn. Vor Zorn über die Untreue griff Apollon zu Pfeil und Bogen und schoss auf sie. Koronis sank zusammen mit einem Seufzer, dass er nun auch seinen ungeborenes Kind verlieren werde. Apollon bereute nun seine Tat. Er rettete das Kind, den Asklepios und brachte ihn zu Chiron, einem weisen Zentauren, zur Erziehung.
In der Obhut des Zentauren Chiron wuchs Asklepios heran und lernte von ihm die Kunst des Heilens. Einer anderen Version dieser Legende zufolge soll er sein Wissen über Heilkräuter von einer Schlange bekommen haben. Asklepios entwickelte seiner Heilkunst immer mehr und verfeinerte sie zusehends, bis er schließlich so weit fortgeschritten war, dass er Meister über Leben und Tod wurde. Er hatte die Fähigkeit erlangt, Tote wieder zum Leben zu erwecken. Ein Orakel prophezeite ihm jedoch, dass er, wenn er dies einmal wagen sollte, von Zeus' Blitz getroffen werde. So bewahrte Asklepios diese Kunst als sein Geheimnis und hütete sich davor, sie anzuwenden.
Hippolytos war der Enkel des Meeresgottes Poseidon. Seine Stiefmutter Phädra, die Tochter von Poseidons Frau Pasiphae, versuchte ihn zu verführen und das Lager seines Vaters zu schänden. Doch Hippolytos wies sie ab und so verleumdete Phädra ihn bei seinem Vater, der ihn daraufhin verfluchte und verstieß. Hippolytos starb kurz darauf bei einem Unfall seines Wagens, als die Pferde vom Meerungeheuer erschreckt durchgingen. Asklepios war zufällig zur Stelle und bedauerte sehr den ungerechten Tod des Hyppolytos. Er erweckte ihn wieder zum Leben. Als Zeus davon erfuhr, schleuderte er einen seiener Blitze auf Asklepios und tötete ihn. Doch um ihn wegen seiner Heilkunst zu ehren, wurde er in den Olymp aufgenommen und zum Gott der Heilkunst ernannt. Er ist heute immer noch am Himmel mit der Schlange zu sehen. In vielen Darstellungen windet sich die Schlange um seinen Gehstock und ist heute das Symbol der medizinischen Berufe. [20]

Asklepios besaß zwei Töchter: Hygeia und Panacea. Es ist offensichtlich, wie deren Namen zu vertrauten, auf die Gesundheit bezogenen Begriffen wurden. Asklepios und sein Töchter sind schon seit langer Zeit die Schutzheiligen der modernen Mediziner. Der "Hippokratische Eid" wurde nach Hippokrates, dem griechischen Mediziner aus der Antike (460-377 v.Chr.) benannt. Dieser wird oft als der Vater der Medizin betrachtet. [102] Der Eid beginnt mit den Worten: "Ich schwöre bei Apollon dem Arzt und bei Asklepios, Hygieia und Panakeia sowie unter Anrufung aller Götter und Göttinnen als Zeugen, dass ich nach Kräften und gemäß meinem Urteil diesen Eid und diesen Vertrag erfüllen werde." [139]
Einer anderen Sage nach soll Asklepios auch der Schiffsarzt der Argo Navis gewesen sein, der Jason und die Argonauten bei der Suche nach gem goldenen Vlies des Widders begleitete. Andere vermuten hinter dem Sternbild Ophiuchus Enkidu, den Gefährten des Gilgamesch, der in Gestalt des Hercules Kopf an Kopf mit ihm über den Himmel zieht. [7]
Aber auch andere Interpretationen gab es, wie Laokoon, jenem Poseidonpriester zu Troja, der die Trojaner gewarnt hatte, dem berühmten Trojanischen Pferd nicht zu trauen; doch kaum hatte er diese Warnung ausgesprochen, kamen von der Insel Tenedos riesige Seeschlangen, die ihn und seine beiden Söhne töteten. Die antiken Mesopotamier sahen in diesem Sternbild den Sonnengott Marduk mit dem Drachen Tiamat, dem Vorgänger der Schlange. [102]
Die Bezeichnung Ophiuchus kommt bereits in der frühesten griechischen Astronomie vor und war auch den Römern bestens bekannt. Sie leitet sich nach dem griechische Wort ophis (Schlange) und cheiro-o (handhaben) ab. Auch einige abweichende Schreibweisen sind zu finden, wie Ophiulchus, Ophiultus und ähnliche. Entsprechend der Identifiaktion mit Asklepios findet man Asclepios und Aesculapius. In Johann Bayers Uranometria von 1603 und in Johannes Hevelius Uranographia von 1690 findet man die die Bezeichnung Serpentarius. [20, 28]
