Eigenschaften

Leo ist ein auffälliges Frühlingssternbild und man erkennt in den Sternen leicht einen liegenden Löwen mit erhobenem Haupt oder einen aufrechten Löwen mit vorgestrecktem Kopf - je nachdem wie man die Sterne verbindet. Andere sehen in der Figur eine Spitzmaus, die den Kopf dort hat wo der Löwe sein Hinterteil und den in die Höh gestreckten, gebogenen Schwanz dort, wo des Löwen Kopf sich befindet. Es besteht aber auch eine gewisse Ähnlichkeit mit einem Bügeleisen, und der westliche Teil des Sternalignements gleicht einer Sichel. [67] Der hellste Stern, Regulus, liegt nahe der Ekliptik und so treten dort manchmal schöne Konjunktionen mit Planeten oder dem Mond auf. Die Fläche des Sternbilds beträgt 947 Quadratgrad und das Zentrum kulminiert jeweils etwa am 1. März. [9, 15]

Mythologie und Geschichte

Mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit handelt es sich hier um den Löwen aus der Herakles-Sage, den er in seiner ersten Aufgabe, die ihm Eurysteus auftrug, bewältigte.

Auf der südgriechischen Halbinsel Peloponnes liegt die liebliche Landschaft Nemea. Dort hauste eine Bestie von besonderer Gefährlichkeit: ein Löwe mit einem Fell hart wie Stahl und trotzdem geschmeidig. Seine fürchterlichen Krallen scharf und hart wie Diamant. Dieser Löwe war auch nicht leicht zu stellen und zu töten, denn er hauste in einer Höhle mit zwei Fluchtwegen. Herakles Pfeile konnten ihn nicht verletzen und all seine Waffen versagten. Um das Entkommen des Löwen zu verhindern, verstellte Herakles den zweiten Fluchtweg der Höhle und von vorne eindringend erwürgte er ihn schließlich mit bloßen Händen. Nicht einmal in den toten Löwenkörper konnte sein Messer eindringen und so musste er die diamantharten Krallen verwenden, um dem Löwen das Fell abzuziehen. Herakles legte sich das Fell über seine Schultern und trug es wie einen Panzer.

Der Löwe war der Sohn der Echidne und des Orthos. Echidne war eine schöne Frau, allerdings nur bis zur Hälfte; ab dort setzte sich ihr Leib als fleckige Schlange fort. Orthos war Echidnes mit Typhon gezeugter gezeugter Sohn und war ein Hund mit zwei Köpfen. Des Löwen Schwester ist die bekannte Sphinx.

Der Löwe als Sternbild wird daher auch Nemeischer Löwe, Nemeaeus, Nemeaeum Monstrum und Hercules Leo genannt. In Persien bezeichnet man ihn Ser oder Shir, in der Türkei Artan, in Syrien Aryo und in Babylonien Aru; immer ist mit diesem Wort ein Löwe gemeint. Beim Christianisierungsversuch wurde er in den Löwen Daniels gewandelt oder - so lächerlich es klingen mag - in den Ungläubigen Thomas. [20, 67]
