Eigenschaften

Das Sternbild Virgo ist nicht besonders auffällig, aber leicht zu finden. Man folgt einfach dem Bogen der Deichsel des Großen Wagens über Arkturus im Sternbild Bootes bis zur Spica, dem hellsten Stern im Sternbild Virgo. Das Alignement selbst hat keine besonders markante Form, doch erkennt man mit viel Phantasie in Strichfiguren einiger Sternkarten eine Frau, die mit gespreizten Beinen und offenen Armen daliegt, wenn auch dies nicht gerade jungfrälich und tugendhaft und in bildlichen Darstellungen nicht der Fall ist. Die Fläche des Sternbilds beträgt 1294 Quadratgrad und ist somit das zweitgrößte am Himmel. Das Zentrum kulminiert jeweils etwa am 12. April um Mitternacht. [9, 15]

Mythologie und Geschichte

Die Griechen sahen in diesem Sternbild die Persephone, die wunderschöne Tochter von Demeter, der griechischen Göttin der Landwirtschaft, der Fruchtbarkeit und der Heirat. Eines Tages, als Persephone gerade im Feld spazierenging, wurde sie von Hades entführt. Die Erde tat sich auf und er entschwand mit ihr auf seinen schwarzen Streitwagen in die Unterwelt, wo sie seine Frau werden sollte. Demeter war so betroffen vom Verlust ihrer Tochter, dass sie vergass ihren Pflichten nachzukommen. Ernten fielen aus und die Leute begannen vor Hunger zu sterben. Zeus, der König der Götter, arbeitete schließlich an einem Kompromiss. Persephone sollte die eine Hälfte des Jahres bei ihrer Mutter verbringen und die andere Hälfte in der Unterwelt bei ihrem Gemahl. So versetzte er sie an einen Platz unter den Sternen. Wenn Persephone in der Unterwelt ist, verharrt die Welt in der Kälte des Winters, wenn sie zu ihrer Mutter Demeter zurückkehrt, beginnt wieder der Frühling. [79]

Nach einer anderen Legende war die Jungfrau Astraea, die Göttin der Gerechtigkeit, Tochter von Zeus und Themis, welche die Erde im Ehernen Zeitalter, als die Menschen die Gerechtigkeit nicht mehr achteten, voll Abscheu verließ, zum Himmel aufflog und zum Sternbild Dike wurde. Die friedliebenden Ackerbauern - so erzählt man - haben sie sehr vermisst und haben, um sich zu trösten, zu diesem Sternbild aufgeschaut, aus dem sie die Göttin der Gerechtigkeit anstrahlte.

Das Sternbild der Jungfrau wird aber auch mit dem Ikarios in Verbindung gebracht. Er lernte von Dionysos die Kunst der Kelterei und wurde von betrunkenen Schafhirten umgebracht, die sich verzaubert glaubten. Nachdem sie ihren Rausch ausgeschlafen hatten, begruben sie Ikarios unter einem Tannenbaum und verwischten alle Spuren sorgfältig, damit ihre Tat nicht bekannt würde. Ikarios' Tochter Erigone wusste nicht wo ihr Vater geblieben war, bis ihr Hund Maria sie an einem Zipfel ihres Gewandes zu jener Stelle zerrte, wo ihr Vater von den Mördern verscharrt worden war. Verzweifelt war Erigone und erhängte sich an dem Tannenbaum, der beim Grab ihres Vaters stand. Der Hund, bekümmert über den Tod der beiden, stürzte sich in einen nahegelegenen Brunnen.

Als Dionysos diese schreckliche Neuigkeit vernahm war er so außer sich vor Zorn, dass er einen Fluch über die Jungfrauen in Athen aussprach, der sie dazu veranlasste, sich selbst an Bäumen aufzuhängen. Die Bürger von Athen waren so erschreckt, dass sie ein Orakel konsultierten. Das Orakel sprach, dass der Tod der Jungfrauen nur gestoppt werden könne, wenn Ikarios' Mörder gefunden und bestraft würden. Das war schnell geschehen. Später zelebrierten die Athenier jedes Jahr beim Weinlesefest den Tod des Ikarios und der Erigone. Trinkopfer werden dem Ikarios und der Erigone dargebracht und Mädchen schaukeln, auf kleinen Brettern stehend, an Seilen im Baumgeäst.

Dionysos schenkte Ikarios, dessen Tochter und ihrem Hund einen Platz unter den Sternen. Ikarios wurde zu Bootes, Erigone wurde zum Sternbild Virgo und der Hund wurde zum Sternbild Canis Minor.

Die alten Ägypter identifizierten das Sternbild Virgo mit der Göttin Isis, der Himmlischen Gattin und Mutter und der hellste Stern wurde als der Lautenträger verehrt. Vermutlich wurde mindestens einer der Tempel von Akhenatons königlicher Stadt, jetzt bekannt als Tell el Amarna auf die Lage des Sterns Spica ausgerichtet. Wäre dem so, könnte es sein, dass dieser eigensinnigste und rätselhafteste der Pharaonen, oft betrachtet als der «erste Monotheist der Geschichte», seiner eigenen «Himmlischen Mutter» huldigte, die exotische und liebliche Nefertiti.

Auch in anderen Ländern wurde das Sternbild Virgo mit einer «Muttergöttin» in Verbindung gebracht: In Assyrien war sie die Frau von Bel, in Babylonien war sie Ishtar, Königin der Sterne und in Indien wurde sie mit Kanya, dem Mädchen und Mutter von Krishna in Verbindung gebracht.

Die alten Babylonier haben nebst Ishtar in dieser Sternkonfiguration eine Kornähre (Spica) gesehen, die einen Teil des Jahres unter der Erde verbringt und im Frühling aus der Erde sprießt um am Himmel zu stehen.

Die Jungfrau wird häufig mit einem Palmzweig in ihrer rechten Hand und der Spica, der Weizenähre, in ihrer linken dargestellt. Man sieht im Sternbild der Jungfrau die Persephone, welche die Römer Proserpina nannten, also die Tochter der Fruchtbarkeitsgöttin Demeter (Ceres). Weil die Jungfrau die Weizenähre trägt, hat man sie auch Spicifera Vorgo Cereris und Virgo Spicea Munera Gestans genannt, aber auch Aristae Puella. Die Jungfrau wurde auch mit einer Waage (Sternbild Libra) als Göttin der Gerechtigkeit dargestellt und Iusta und Iustitia bezeichnet und sogar ausdrücklich Astraea (Göttin der Gerechtigkeit) genannt. Auch die Bezeichnungen Pax (Friede), Concordia (Göttin der Eintracht), Fortuna (Schicksals- und Glücksgöttin) und andere findet man. Im christianisierten Sternenhimmel hat sich die Jungfrau zur Jungfrau Maria verwandelt. [20]
