Eigenschaften

Leo Minor liegt zwischen den großen und hellen Sternbildern Leo und Ursa Maior. Das amorphe Sterngebilde ist aus mehreren schwachen Sternen 4. Größe zusammengesetzt. Das markanteste ist ein langes, gleichschenkliges Dreieck mit der Basis im Süden, parallel zum Himmelsäquator. Die Fläche beträgt 232 Quadratgrad und das Zentrum kulminiert jeweils etwa am 24. Februar um Mitternacht. [9, 15]

Geschichte

Leo Minor wurde vom Danziger Astronomen Johannes Hevelius in seinem Werk Prodromus Astronomiae 1690 eingeführt. Die Bezeichnung der Sterne ist sehr bruchstückhaft geblieben, da die meisten Himmelskartographen dieses Sternbild unberücksichtigt ließen. Nur der zweithellste Stern wurde mit einem griechischen Buchstaben bezeichnet: β Leonis Minoris. Der hellste Stern ist 46 Leonis Minoris (Praecipua). [7]
