Eigenschaften

Das Sternbild befindet sich zwischen Leo und Gemini auf der Ekliptik und ist eher unauffällig, denn kein Stern ist heller als die 4. Größenklasse. Man erkennt es aber leicht am etwas nebelhaft erscheinenden Fleck am Himmel, der durch den offenen Sternhaufen Praesepe hervorgerufen wird. Das Sternbild erstreckt sich über eine Fläche von 506 Quadratgrad und kulminiert jeweils etwa am 30. Januar um Mitternacht. [9, 15]

Mythologie und Geschichte

Herakles, der Sohn des Zeus und der Alkmene, wurde Zeit seines Lebens von Hera gehasst, weil er ein uneheliches Kind ihres Gatten Zeus war. In einer ganz gefährlichen Situation - als nämlich Herakles mit der Wasserschlange kämpfte - und Herakles schon zu siegen schien, da schickte sie aus den lernäischen Sümpfen einen großen, gefährlichen Krebs, der in schmerzhaft in die Ferse stach. Hera glaubte, Herakles dadurch endlich vernichten zu können, doch dieser zertrat den Krebs und schleuderte ihn von sich. Hera versetzte den Krebs an den Himmel, vor die nördliche Wasserschlange, um ihm wenigstens auf diese Art noch Ehre zu erweisen. [20, 57]

In den Alfonsinischen Tafeln (in den Jahren 1248-52 durch ein Kollegium von 50 Astronomen im Auftrag von König Alfons geschaffene Planetentafeln [6] findet man die transkribierte Form Carcinus der griechischen Bezeichnung. Der Krebs wird von Ovid auch Octipes (achtfüßig) genannt, obwohl man auf der Sternkarte bestensfalls nur vier Beine findet. Aber auch Litoreus wird er genannt, offenbar war er ein Uferkrebs (litus = Meeresufer, Strand, Seeufer, Flussufer). Cicero nennt ihn Nepa und sieht in ihm also einen afrikanischen Skorpion. Die Bezeichnung Lernaeus will sagen, dass er aus den lernänischen Sümpfen stammt.

Der deutsche Orientalist Jensen behauptet, dass dieses Sternbild mit der Schildkröte identisch sei, welche in der babylonischen und ägyptischen Kultur schon 4000 v.Chr. konfiguriert wurde. In anderen ägyptischen Aufzeichnungen aus der Zeit 2000 v.Chr. wird hier ein Skarabaeus, ein Pillendreher gesehen. Weitere Bezeichnungen waren Wasserkäfer, Languste, Hummer und Cancer minor. Nach dem Christianisierungsvorschlag von Julius Schiller sollte es zum Heiligen Johannes, dem Evangelisten werden. [20]
