Eigenschaften

Der Hauptteil der königlichen Haarpracht wird von einem lockeren Sternhaufen mit rund 30 Mitgliedern gebildet, dem sogenannten Coma-Sternhaufen (Mel 111), der eine Ausdehnung von einigen Grad besitzt und am besten in einem Fernglas oder in einer sehr dunklen Gegend zu erkennen ist. Coma Berenices befindet sich westlich vom hellen Stern Arcturus vom Sternbild Bootes. Die hellsten Sterne gehören der 5. und 6. Größenklasse an und bilden ein auffälliges V. Der Haufen, dessen Sterne rund 250 Lichtjahre entfernt sind, liegt nahe bei gamma Comae, der selbst aber wohl nicht zum Haufen gehört. Darüber enthält das Sternbild noch eine andere Art von Haufen - einen Galaxienhaufen in etwa 400 Millionen Lichtjahren Entfernung. Das Sternbild Coma Berenices nimmt am Himmel einen Platz von 386 Quadratgrad ein. Es kulminiert jeweils etwa am 2. April um Mitternacht. [7, 9, 15]

Mythologie und Geschichte

Die Volkskunde, die wir heute über das Sternbild Coma Berenices kennen, stammt aus dem alten Ägypten. Die Legenden erzählen von der Königin Berenice, der Tochter des Königs Maegerse aus Cyrene. Sie war so von Kummer geplagt, weil ihr Gatte, König Ptolemaeus Euergetes in den Krieg gegen die Assyrer gezogen war. Sie gelobte ihre wunderschönen, langen, wallenden Haare dem Gott der Schönheit zu opfern, wenn ihr König wieder heil zurück käme. Der König kam zurück und Berenice musste ihr Versprechen einlösen. Sie schnitt sich ihre Haare ab und legte sie in einen Tempel unter die wachsamen Augen der Tempelwächter.

In einer mondlosen Nacht, als das ganze Land in Dunkelheit gehüllt war, packte den König das Verlangen die langen, schönen Haare seiner Gattin wieder zu betrachten. Er ging zu dem Tempel und traf auf die Tempelwächter. Sie erzählten ihm, dass die Haare wenige Augenblicke zuvor verschwunden seien. Noch bevor der König wütend über die Unachtsamkeit der Wächter werden konnte, erzählten sie ihm flugs, die Götter seien so erfreut vom Opfer der Königin Berenice gewesen, dass sie ihren Haaren für alle Ewigkeit einen Platz am gestirnten Firmament schenkten. Dann zeigten die Wächter gen Himmel auf ein wunderschöne, lockere Ansammlung schwacher Sterne. Der König war zufrieden, dass er nun Berenices Haare sehen konnte, wann immer er Lust dazu hatte. [89]

Die Sage stammt zwar aus griechischer Zeit, doch das Sternbild wurde früher entweder zum Sternbild Leo oder zum Sternbild Virgo hinzugezählt. Erst zu Beginn des 17. Jahrhunderts, kurz vor dem Tode Tycho Brahes, wurde es als eigenständiges Sternbild in seinen Katalog aufgenommen. [7]
