Eigenschaften

Sextans ist mit einer Fläche von 314 Quadratgrad ein kleines und unauffälliges Sternbild südlich von Regulus in Leo. Es besteht lediglich aus Sternen 4. und 5. Größenklasse und kulminiert jeweils etwa am 21. Februar um Mitternacht. [9, 15]

Geschichte

Der Bürgermeister von Danzig, Jan Hevelcke (latinisiert Hevelius) führte 1690 in seinem Buch Prodromus Astronomiae einige neue Benennungen für Örter am Himmel ein, wo sich wenige Sterne befinden. Dieses Bestreben lässt sich dadurch erklären, dass es damals keine international anerkannten Grenzen der Sternbildsysteme gab, wodurch viel Verwirrung entstand. Deshalb wollte man alle diese leeren Örter mit weiteren kleinen Sternbildern auffüllen. Auf diese Weise gelangte das Symbol des Sextanten in die Sternkarten. Hevelius selbst verstand Sextanten anzufertigen und benutzte diese auch zur Vermessung der Sternpositionen, nachdem das Fernrohr schon lange erfunden worden war. [7, 21]
