Sternbild Ara (Altar)

Eigenschaften
Ara liegt in einer sternreichen Gegend der Milchstraße südlich vom Schwanz des Skorpions. Das Sternbild umschließt eine Fläche von 237 Quadratgrad und kulminiert um Mitternacht etwa am 12. Juni, ist aber von Europa aus nicht sichtbar. [9, 15]

Mythologie und Geschichte
Das Sternbild war trotz seiner wenig auffälligen Umrisse bereits im Altertum den Griechen und Römern bekannt. Der Sage nach hat Centaurus auf diesem Altar den Wolf geopfert. [7] Eine andere Erklärung sah darin den Tisch der Götter. Unter den 48 Sternbildern des Ptolemaios erscheint dieses als das dreibeinige Weihrauchfass, welchem er sieben Sterne zugeordnet hatte. [15]
