Eigenschaften

Das langgestreckte Sternbild ist mit einer Fläche von 1138 Quadratgrad die sechstgrößte Figur am Himmel, aufgrund der meist schwachen Sterne jedoch wenig auffällig. Der Fluss schlängelt sich vom Rigel in Orion zu Cetus im Westen hinüber und dann hinunter nach Süden bis zu Hydrus, wo er dann mit dem hellsten Stern in dieser Konstellation, Achernar, endet. Achernar kulminiert jeweils etwa am 14. Oktober um Mitternacht und das Zentrum des Sternbilds etwa am 10. November. [9, 15]

Mythologie

In der griechischen Sagenwelt ist Eridanus jener Fluss, in den Phaethon, der Geliebte von Kyknos, stürzte, als er versucht hatte, den Sonnenwagen seines Vaters Helios über den Himmel zu fahren. Es gibt aber auch Versuche, ihn mit einem irdischen Fluss in Verbindung zu bringen, dem Po in Oberitalien, dem Nil oder dem Euphrat.

Ursprünglich endete Eridanus beim Stern θ Eridani, dessen Name Acamar sich von Achernar (Ende des Flusses) ableitet; damals gehörten die Sterne des Fornax noch mit zu Eridanus. Später wurde Eridanus dann bis fast 60 Grad südlicher Breite verlängert. So erhielt ein anderer Stern den Beinamen Achernar. [7]
