Eigenschaften

Fornax ist ein unauffälliges Sternbild südlich der Grenze von Eridanus zu Cetus. Es enthält nur wenige Sterne, die hell genug sind, um markant zu sein. Die Sternbildfläche beträgt 398 Quadratgrad und das Zentrum kulminiert jeweils etwa am 4. November um Mitternacht. [9, 15]

Geschichte

Das Sternbild wurde Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts von Nicolas Louis de Lacaille ursprünglich unter dem Namen Fornax Chemica (Chemischer Schmelzofen) eingeführt. Der Name sollte die Bedeutung der Chemie unterstreichen, so wie sie den Zeitgenossen des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts erschien. Früher gehörten die Sterne dieser Konstellation zum Sternbild Eridanus.
