Eigenschaften
Das Sternbild steht südlich von Orion, getrennt durch Lepus. Es ist ein eher unscheinbares Sternbild, dessen auffälligstes Merkmal eine Wellenlinie aus sechs Sternen ist, die von Ost nach West verläuft. Das Sternbild bedeckt 270 Quadratgrad des Himmels und kulminiert jeweils etwa am 17. Dezember um Mitternacht. [9, 15]
Sterne mit Eigennamen:
- α Col: Phaet, Phakt, Phact, Phad
- β Col: Wezn, Wazn
Mythologie und Geschichte
Columba ist ein Sternbild mit Beziehung zu Argo Navis (heute aufgeteilt in Carina, Vela, Puppis, Pyxis). Die einen sehen darin die Taube, die den Argonauten den Weg zwischen todbringenden Felsen am Eingang des Schwarzen Meeres wies, andere erkennen in ihr die Taube Noahs, welche Noah nach der Sintflut aussandte um nach Land zu suchen.
Das Sternbild wurde von Johann Bayer in seiner Uranometria von 1603 eingeführt und 1679 von dem Franzosen Augustin Royer in eine offizielle Liste übernommen. [7]
