Eigenschaften

Vela, das Segel des großen Schiffes, liegt im Band der Milchstraße. Die Sterne kappa und delta Velorum bilden zusammen mit iota und epsilon Carinae ein großes Kreuz, das von Unkundigen oft mit dem Kreuz des Südens weiter westlich verwechselt wird und deshalb Falsches Kreuz heißt. Die Fläche des Sternbildes beträgt 500 Quadratgrad und das Zentrum kulminiert jeweils etwa am 11. Februar um Mitternacht. [9, 15]

Mythologie und Geschichte

Die Sterne des Sternbilds Vela gehörten früher zum Sternbild Argo Navis und bilden heute ein Teil dessen, was Lacaille vom ürsprünglichen Sternbild übriggelassen hat. Die anderen Teile sind Carina, Puppis und Pyxis. Argo Navis war das Schiff vom thessalischen Helden Jason und seiner Besatzung, den Argonauten aus der griechischen Sage. Es half bei der Suche nach dem goldenen Vlies des Widders und konnte sprechen und weissagen.

Die hellsten Sterne der vier Teil-Sternbilder des Argo Navis besitzen immer noch eine durchgehende Bezeichnung mit griechischen Buchstaben, da Johann Bayer das Sternbild vor Nicolas Louis de Lacaille in seine Uranometria aufgenommen hatte. [6, 7, 10]
