Eigenschaften

Das Sternbild liegt südlich der Großen Magellanschen Wolke und teilt diese mit dem Sternbild Dorado weiter nördlich. Ansonsten ist Mensa unauffällig, denn die hellsten Sterne erreichen knapp 5. Größe. Die Fläche beträgt 153 Quadratgrad und das Zentrum kulminiert jeweils etwa am 13. Dezember um Mitternacht. [9, 15]

Geschichte

Das Sternbild wurde Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts von Lacaille unter dem Namen Mons Mensa zur Erinnerung an den Tafelberg am Kap der Guten Hoffnung in Sein Werk "Coelum australe stelliferum" eingeführt. Er hatte von dort aus er den südlichen Himmel erkundet. Die Große Magellansche Wolke ragt teilweise in Mensa hinein und hat Lacaille vielleicht an die irdischen Wolken erinnert, die den Tafelberg oft genug einhüllten. [7, 21]
