Eigenschaften

Das Sternbild liegt südöstlich vom hellen Stern Canopus im Sternbild Carina. Das auffälligste Merkmal ist die Große Magellansche Wolke im Süden des Sternbilds. Das ist die größere der beiden Begleitersysteme unserer Galaxis. Die Kleine Magellansche Wolke liegt rund 20 Grad weiter westlich im Sternbild Tucana. Das Sternbild bedeckt am Himmel eine Fläche von 179 Quadratgrad und kulminiert jeweils etwa am 7. Dezember um Mitternacht, ist aber von Europa aus nicht sichtbar. [9, 15]

Geschichte

Das Sternbild wurde erstmals 1603 von Johann Bayer in seiner Uranometria aufgeführt. Es repräsentiert entweder einen Goldfisch oder einen Schwertfisch. [7]
