History

The three galaxies NGC 2726, NGC 2742 and NGC 2768 have been discovered by William Herschel on 19 March 1790. NGC 2726 he listed as II 834 and noted: «Pretty faint, pretty small, irregular figure, easily resolvable.» NGC 2742 he listed as I 249 and noted: «Considerably bright, extended, near parallel, easily resolvable, brighter in the middle, 4' long, 2' broad. I supose, with a higher power and longer attention, the stars would become visible.» NGC 2768 he listed as I 250 and noted: «Very bright, considerably large, little extended, large bright nucleus in the middle.» [465]
