Sternbild Piscis Austrinus (Südlicher Fisch)

Eigenschaften
Piscis Austrinus liegt südlich von Aquarius. Das auffälligste Merkmal ist der helle Stern Formalhaut, sonst weist es keine besonders markante Form auf. Vom Krug des Wassermanns fließt eine Zickzacklinie aus Sternen in Richtung Formalhaut. Die Fläche des Sternbildes beträgt 245 Grad und das Zentrum kulminiert jeweils etwa am 25. August um Mitternacht. [9, 15]

Mythologie und Geschichte
Das alte Sternbild mitunter auch Piscis Australis oder Pisces Australis genannt, wurde oft als Fisch dargestellt, der sich am Wasserstrom des benachbarten Aquarius labt - eigentlich seltsam, da Fische kein Wasser trinken. Der südliche Fisch gehört zusammen mit Aquarius, Capricornus und Cetus zu den Sternbildern, die mit Wasser assoziiert werden. Er wird mit dem babylonischen Fischgott Oannes in Verbindung gebracht und gilt als Vorfahr der Ekliptik-Fische. Im alten Griechenland und Rom verbreitete sich der Kult der ägyptischen Göttin Isis. Der Name hängt mit der Sage zusammen, nach der die Göttin durch einen Fisch vor dem Ertrinken gerettet wurde. [7, 21, 64]
