Eigenschaften

Das Sternbild besteht vorwiegend aus schwächeren Sternen von durchschnittlich 4. Größe und stellt zwei Fische dar, die an ihren Schwänzen verknotet sind. Der Knoten selbst wird durch den Stern alpha Piscium markiert. Pisces liegt südlich und südöstlich von Pegasus und südlich von Andromeda. Das auffälligste Merkmal dieses unscheinbaren Sternbildes ist eine Ellipse aus sieben schwachen Sternen südlich des Pegasus-Rechtecks. Pisces bedeckt eine Fläche von 889 Quadratgrad und das Zentrum kulminiert jeweils etwa am 27. September um Mitternacht. [9]

Mythologie und Geschichte

In der antiken griechischen Mythologie repräsentieren diese Fische Aphrodite und ihren Sohn Eos. Beide waren gerade am schwimmen, als ein Monster, Typhen, pötzlich erschien und ihnen Furcht einflößte. Um den Monster zu entkommen verwandelten sich die beiden in Fische, durch ein Band zusammengehalten, so dass sie nicht getrennt würden. Um die Erinnerung an diesen Augenblick zu erhalten, wurden die beiden an das Himmelsgewölbe gesetzt. [83]

Eine andere Version dieser Geschichte schildert, wie Giganten, riesenhafte Söhne der Erde einst den Himmel stürmen wollten. Besonders Typhon, ein Riese mit hundert Armen, versetzte die Himmelsbewohner in Angst und Schrecken. Alle flohen und die Himmlischen versuchten sich zu verstecken, indem sie irdischen Gestalten annahmen. Zeus verwandelte sich ein einen Leithammel, Apollon in einen Raben, Dionysos in einen Bock, Artemis in eine Katze und Hera in eine weiße Kuh. In diesem Wirrsinn haben sich zwei Fische, die sich im Euphrat tummelten, den Göttern als besonders hilfreich erwiesen:

Als Zeus mit Waffen den Himmel verteidigte, kam Aphrodite, nur von ihrem kleinen Sohn Cupido begleitet, auf der Flucht vor dem grimmigen Typhon an den Euphrat und ließ sich am Ufer des palästinischen Stromes nieder. Oben säumten Schilf und Pappeln seine Ufer, und die Weiden ließen auf ein himmlisches Obdach hoffen. Als sie sich verborgen hatten, sang der Wind im Wald. Aphrodite wurde bleich vor Schreck und glaubte, Häscher des Feindes seien da. Sie presste ihren Knaben an die Brust und rief die Nymphen um Schutz. Ohne Zaudern sprang sie dann ins Wasser. Da boten zwei Fische ihren Rücken, wofür sie jetzt die Sterne als ein würdiges Geschenk besitzen. [7, 20]

In den Alfonsinischen Tafeln (1215) ist dieses Sternbild mit Pesces bekannt. In der Ausgabe des ptolemäischen Almagest von 1515 liest man Echiguen, bzw. beim deutschen Astronomen Bayer (1572-1625) Ichiguen. Beide Bezeichnungen sind verstümmelte Worte für den griechischen Ausdruck Ichthues (Fisch). Die Römer haben die Fische oft als Imbrifer Duo Pisces, als die beiden regenbringenden Fische bezeichnet, aber auch Gemini Pisces und Piscis Gemellus, also als Fischpaar. Die Erzählung von den beiden Göttern, die sich aus Furcht vor dem Riesen Typhon in den Euphrat stürzten, wiederspiegelt sich in den Bezeichnungen Venus et Cupido, Venus Syria cum Cupidine und Venus cum Adone.

Im christlichen Denkbereich erinnern die Fische an das Wunder Christi anlässlich der Speisung tausender Menschen. Die Fische waren darüber hinaus ein altes Symbol des christlichen Glaubens. [20]

Der Stern von Betlehem

Etwa zu Beginn des 6. nachchristlichen Jahrhunderts versuchte der in Rom lebende skythische Mönch Dionysius Exiguus etwas Ordnung in die wirre Jahreszählung der verschiedensten Völker Europas und des Nahen Ostens zu bringen. Er beschloss daher das Jahr der Geburt Christi als Beginn für eine fortlaufende Jahreszählung zu verwenden. Er rechnete anhand von Ostertafeln, die seit dem 3. Jahrhundert im Umlauf waren und die Daten künftiger Osterfeste enthielten, die Jahre zurück und kam so auf ein Datum, das sich aber nach heutigem Vollzug dieser Rechnung als rund sechs Jahre zu spät erwies. [135]

Im Jahre 6 v. Chr. (oder -7 nach astronomischer Zählung) kam es im Sternbild Pisces zu einer seltenen dreifachen Konjunktion zwischen Jupiter und Saturn. Die erste dieser drei Konjunktionen fand am 29. Mai 6 v. Chr. mit 1° Winkelabstand statt, die zweite am 1. Oktober ebenfalls mit 1° und die dritte am 5. Dezember mit 1.1° (Julianischer Kalender). [129] Konjunktionen zwischen Jupiter und Saturn treten zwar rund alle 20 Jahre auf, doch sind die wenigsten gleich dreifach mit derart geringem Winkelabstand.

Diese beiden Tatsachen lassen mit ziemlicher Sicherheit darauf rückschließen, dass jene Jupiter-Saturn-Konjunktion als der Stern von Bethlehem in die Geschichte und christliche Glaubenswelt einging. Die Assoziation mit einem Kometen, wie ihn 1304 der Florentier Meister Giotto di Bondone in einem Fresko darstellte, scheint eher unwahrscheinlich, da Kometen früher von sehr vielen Kulturen als schlechtes Omen oder gar Boten des Unheils angesehen wurden. [27] Eine Supernova kommt aufgrund fehlender Überreste aus jener Zeit im Sternbild der Fische ebenfalls nicht in Frage.
